Forbes was born a Scot, but not in Scotland. His name comes from the Clan associations of his mother and father, both true Scots. He was lucky in his education, and - rather to the disdain of his St Andrews University-educated parents - went to Cambridge, where some of his earliest works were written.

Forbes had a science background which shapes and permeates his work. He views life from a standpoint of utter pragmatism. This is coloured by emotions only to the degree that their influence is inevitable and unconscious.
